I started racing on the street Friday and
Saturday nights in 1976. The car was a 1967 Chevelle equipped with a
.030 over 283 small block, four speed transmission, and a 12 bolt Chevy
rear with 4.56 gears. This was one of many very fast street racing
machines that I had built.
In 1980 I got serious into the racing and built a full race 1971
Chevelle. Under the hood was a 355 cubic inch small block Chevy bolted
to a Turbo 350 trans with an 8" 4500 rpm stall converter. The rear
was a Chevy 12 bolt with 4.11 gears. I bought a tow bar and freewheeling
hubs and went to the racetrack for the first time. Even though I had
never bracket raced before, I was runner-up in the first two events that
I competed in.
I went on to run in the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park points
program with mixed results. I missed qualifying for the Division One E.T.
Bracket Finals by one points three years in a row. I continued to
compete seriously for the next two years. Then I took a six year layoff
while I started my towing business, Zulla’s Towing.
In 1991 I was back running a limited schedule with a 1978 Monte Carlo
that I built. It had a 402 big block Chevy, a Turbo 350 trans with a
10" converter and a 12 bolt rear. It ran low 12’s and was a lot
of fun to drive.
The winter of 1991 was the turning
point. I built the familiar and legendary orange, yellow, and white 1969
Camaro. This car was the machine that started my very long winning
streak. The rest, as they say is history!!!
